  Intent:

Music is a unique and expressive way of communicating that can inspire and motivate pupils. It is a means of personal expression and can play an important part in pupils' personal development. Through music, we can express, represent and communicate our ideas and perceptions.

All pupils will learn skills that enhance their fine motor and sensory skills, communication abilities, language, focus, independence, self-expression and confidence. Pupils will experiment and try new ideas where there are no right or wrong answers. Pupils will develop their knowledge and understanding of music through exploration, experience and engagement with a wide range of sounds and instruments, as well as developing an awareness of different cultures and traditions.

Implementation:

Music is valued and promoted through direct teaching and purposeful learning opportunities in our school. Adults  promote pupils' creativity and imagination by valuing their ideas and encouraging freedom of expression. They support and facilitate  opportunities for pupils to explore, rehearse, refine and develop their musical skills .  Music is delivered through our Creative curriculum. Through Expressive Arts and Design in EYFS, delivered as a non-core subject from KS1 through to KS4 and as in Post 16 through the curriculum area of Health and Well-being - Personal Interest and Religions for Life and will be accredited through ASDAN units where relevant.

Lower school KS1 and 2 use Charanga Units 1-12, Music Express and Sound soft intent-Amber Trust. Upper school KS3 and 4 use Charanga Units 13-24, Leicestershire Music resources and Sounds of intent-Sounabout families. This ensures the pupils have a varied and vibrant experience during their musical journey through school.

Impact:

The musical journey of pupils in our school and the experience we offer, will engage and inspire pupils to have a love and appreciation of music.  The impact of teaching music will enable personal expression, reflexion and emotional development. By encouraging the enjoyment and engagement in music, pupils will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that will allow them to fulfil their potential. Music allows all pupils to develop and enhance performance in non-arts academic subjects such as mathematics, science, reading and writing, and to strengthen pupils’ academic motivation, self-confidence, and ability to communicate and co-operate effectively.
